Tanya L. Pratt, MSW, CPIA

I am a proud 15-year resident of Haslett/Meridian Township, Michigan, along with my loving husband Ervin. Together, we have raised three incredible adult children and have been blessed with two grandchildren. Family is the cornerstone of my life, and it is what drives me to help make our community an even better place for generations to come.

My journey began when I earned my Master’s in Social Work at the University of Michigan. It was then that I cultivated a passion for being a “change agent,” dedicating my career to advocating for the most vulnerable among us…our children and families.

From my early days working within the foster care system to my tenure at the Flint Community School system, I’ve been on the front lines, fighting tirelessly to ensure that every child has access to a quality education and support. It was my commitment to our youth that led me to the Michigan Education Association (MEA), where I served as a UniServ Director for an impactful 15 years. Currently, I am a Director of Field Services, for Michigan Education Special Service Association (MESSA), the Voluntary Employee Benefit Association founded by MEA which provides health care (medical, dental, vision, etc) for school employees as well as some municipalities.

The People’s Advocate

As a UniServ Director, I had the privilege of advocating for thousands of K-12, community college, and university employees across our state. I’ve negotiated countless collective bargaining agreements, led crisis teams to secure better wages and working conditions and championed the election of pro-public education candidates at every level of government.

But my dedication doesn’t end there. I have rolled up my sleeves and worked side by side with educators, administrators and community leaders to address the pressing issues facing our schools and our neighborhoods. Whether it’s advocating for smaller class sizes, securing resources for mental health services or fighting for equitable school funding, I’ve been there every step of the way.

Community

I have the pleasure of serving the residents of Meridian Township as an appointee to the Meridian Township Pension Board Committee and the Local Officials Compensation Commission.

As a member of the Lansing/East Lansing (MI) Links, Inc., my service continues alongside many other friends whose goal is to better our community.

My membership and commitment to the Lansing Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, has provided additional support to my community as Service, Scholarship and Sisterhood are our core tenets.

Working with community organizations to bring the needed resources to our youth and families is crucial to society’s growth and betterment.
